Educational and scientific activities of the department

The mission of the department is the formation of an advanced research, educational and methodological center in the branches of biological sciences.

Educational Activity

With the purpose of qualitative preparation of specialists, the faculty of the department annually develops and updates educational and methodological documents, including: the educational and methodological complex of disciplines, lectures and practical teaching and methodical instructions.

For the purpose of introduction of elements of dual training in educational process taking into account offers of employers the following elective courses are included in educational programs: “Decorative gardening, bases of the organization of landscape works”, “a Technique of preparation of experts-professional biologists” (the City station of young naturalists); “Bases of cultivation of agricultural crops” (the Aktobe institution of forestry);  “Forestry of Aktobe region”, “Forest biology”, “forest Park economy” (Kazakh research Institute of forestry and agromelioration-West Kazakhstan branch); “Fundamentals of floriculture”, ” Biodiversity of ornamental plants “(Department of biology); “Fundamentals of Agrochemistry of crop production, agriculture, soil science” (Aktobe agricultural experimental station), “Technology of production of fruits and vegetables”, “Modern technologies of cultivation of planting material”, “Greenhouse economy” (Aktobe higher agricultural College), “flora and fauna of Irgiz-Turgay state natural reserve” (Irgiz-Turgay state natural reserve), “Methods of teaching updated content of secondary education” (school №6. In order to implement the program “Trilingualism” in the curriculum OP 6V01505 –”Biology” introduced elective courses in English.

As part of the dual elements, practical classes are currently held at the following enterprises:  Aktobe higher agricultural College,  “Biology Teaching Methodology” (K. Satpayev Secondary School-Lyceum), “Methodology of Training Professional Biologists” (City Young Naturalists Station), “Methodology of Training Specialist Biologists” (City Young Naturalists Station), “Forest Biology” (Nursery of Forestry in Aktobe region), “Methodology of Criterion Assessment in the updated educational program” (Secondary General Education School №69), “Teaching Methodology of the updated content of secondary education” (Secondary School-Lyceum named after K. Satpayev).

In order to organize educational, pedagogical and industrial practice of students, contracts were concluded with the following practical bases: Education Department of Aktobe, “Aktobe Agricultural Experimental Station”, “Irgiz-Torgai State Natural Reserve”, “Station of Young Naturalists”, “Phytosanitary”, ” Aktobe Forestry “,” Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Management of the Aktobe Region “,” Aktobe Regional Sanitary and Epidemiological Center “,” Aktobe Anti-Plague Station “,” Hygienist “LLP,” Aktobe Farm “LLP,” Agrofirma-Tau “LLP, etc…The production practice is the main goal, contributing to the approbation and strengthening of the theoretical knowledge obtained by students in practice, as well as improving the connection of educational institutions with production.

     

The professors and pedagogical staff of the department conducts press conferences, round tables, debates and discussions on the use in the educational process of interactive approaches, creative assignments, technology of tiered differentiation of teaching, creative education, the taxonomy of Bloom.  teacher, MD B.Sarimbayeva was awarded in the contest “Best Open Lesson in Interactive Form” among teachers of the University in the nomination “Creation of optimal learning conditions “, and  teacher, MD I.Zh.Moldekova participating , in the contest “Methodical Projects”, took 1st place.

For the purpose of mutual exchange of experience for teaching staff the faculty of the Department of Biology and secondary school teachers in the village of Novy, (branch of the Department and Nazarbayev intellectual school) organized and held a round table on “New methods of teaching biology”.

Also at the university level, a methodological seminar was held on the theme “Methodology for the preparation of future pedagogical specialists on the basis of the trilingual policy.

In the 2017-2018 academic year, a methodical seminar was held on the theme: “Innovative technologies in teaching biological disciplines-new information technologies based on the achievements of science”, and a methodical seminar was organized by the counselors of the schools of the young teacher on the theme:”teacher’s Skill-the result of the search”. In addition, on the basis of Nazarbayev Intellectual school, the project “Uyren-bolis” is implemented where students attend classes, coaching, training and internships on the updated content of the program and teaching methods in English.

Researchers, PhD from London UK Sonia Rego  (London University of hygiene and tropical medicine) and Matt Kushner (University of London.Alan Turan) conducted a training in English for students by the method of “team-teaching technique”.

 

In 2018-2019 school year, the Department had organized seminars on the theme: «Methods and efficiency of use of digital educational resources in learning and Opportunities onlain resources in the teaching of natural Sciences» on the basis of a new middle school «Methods of training of future teachers on the basis of the trilingual policy», «Updated content of education is the demand of time». The seminar was attended by representatives of the following branches of the Department: «New secondary school», «Aktobe humanitarian College».

In the 2020-2021 academic year, together with the branches of the department, online seminars were held on the topic: “Ways of organizing the educational process using network technologies for teaching natural science disciplines”, “problems of distance learning of the cycle of natural science disciplines in educational institutions”, “modern problems of training bachelors of natural technology and pedagogical directions in higher education in conditions of distance learning”.

On April 14, 2021-2022 of the academic year, within the framework of the “Month of Science” at the Department of Biology, a regular meeting of the Zhas Maman circle was held, organized by the head of the circle G. U. Keubasova In order to improve the digital literacy of young specialists, a training seminar was organized for members of the circle and teachers of the department.

There was also a round table on the topic “Diversity and care of indoor plants”, organized by the senior lecturer of the Department of Biology, the head of the circle “Plant world” Agadieva M.S.. During the event, students of the specialty “Biology” Nasibullina Dinara, Kurganbaeva Merey, Toregalieva Gaziza, Yechimova Guldana, Bakytzhan Dauletkhan made presentations on the topic.

On November 3, 2021, PhD, associate professor Ataeva G. M. held a scientific seminar on the accounting of research works of students of the 2nd year of educational programs 7M05101 – Biology and 7M01505–Biology on the topic “Actual problems of studying and of education and science of modern biological direction”.

    

On March 10, 2022, according to the plan of methodological work of the Department of biology, the head of the methodological section of the Department of Bisalyevoy R. N. held a round table on the topic “formation of professional mastery and competence of future biologists – the main provision of methodological work”.

   

in 2022-2023 academic year the regional scientific and practical center for additional education “Aktobe-Daryn” and the Department of Biology held a seminar on “Organization and formation of research activities of students” for teachers of schools of Aktobe region and the city. Associate Professor of the Department, Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences S. F. Semenikhina made presentations on “Organization and planning of project and research activities” and “The lesson of modern biology: innovations and requirements.

    

In the 2022-2023 school year, teachers of the Biology Department Kuanbai J.I. and Bisalyyeva R.N. in accordance with the methodological plan of the department and the work plan of the branch. conducted a methodological seminar on “Development of tasks of formative and summative assessment”. Teachers of Biology at secondary school named after T.Zharmagambetov and gymnasium № 51, which are affiliated branch of the Biology Department, teachers of the Biology Department and 3rd year students of EP 6B01505-Biology took part in the seminar. Also, on February 9 of the current academic year in accordance with the plan of methodological work of the Department of Biology subject project “Ways of effective use of innovative technologies in education.

In order to attract foreign specialists to educational activities in the 2022-2023 academic year from 06 to 18 November 2022, the Department of Biology invited Doctor of Biological Sciences, Professor Andrey Kupriyanov (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences). During the project, a workshop was held on the topic “publications in international publications: current topics, scientific novelty and content”, lectures and practical classes on the discipline “problems of plant systematics: botanical species”, master classes on the topic “methodology of modern botanical research”, work with the herbarium fund.

     

In the academic year 2022-2023 in order to attract foreign specialists in educational activities, the scientist from the Faculty of Biology, Faculty of Natural Sciences of Pamukkale University in the Turkish state PhD Dr. Refika Ceyda Beram conducted a master class for teachers, undergraduates and students on “Presentation about early diagnosis methods”. During this event, the scientist analyzed plant diseases, early detection methods with a description of the pathogens that cause them, the equipment used, the effectiveness and duration of the methods, the rules of work in the laboratory with plant pathogens. Explained the course of research work on plant diseases, answered the questions of teachers and students.

        

On April 15, 2023-2024 academic year, as part of "Science Month," the Department of Biology, under the guidance of instructors A.M. Abdukarimov and S.T. Syrymbetov, held a seminar titled "The Role of Living Horns in Fostering an Attitude of Care for Nature" at the "Young Naturalists Station" for students of the educational programs "6B05101-Biology" and "6B01505-Biology."

During the seminar, students were introduced to various types of animals, including freshwater and swamp turtles from reptiles, such as the mute swan, turkey, pheasant, steppe eagle, parrot, and pigeon from birds, as well as mammals like the large rabbit, Canadian wolf, and sea pig. They learned about the unique aspects of caring for and maintaining these animals.

Assistant  professor of the biology department S.F. Semenikhina, in the period from 3.03.23 to 12.03.23, was trained in Bydgoszcz (Poland) under the international Erasmus+ program, the RITA project – “Polish-Kazakh Regional Center for Safety and Rescue Training”. The project was implemented by the Sports and Rescue Center together with Aktobe Regional University named after K.Zhubanov.

                

To attract foreign specialists to educational activities in the 2023-2024 academic year, Associate Professor of Belarusian State University, Candidate of Biological Sciences, Valery Nikolaevich Tikhomirov, was invited to the Department of Biology from April 15 to 26, 2024.
Ø The main focus of V.N. Tikhomirov's scientific work is botany, regional floristics, geobotany, and urban floristics. In addition, the scientist is engaged in studying the patterns of flora formation in Belarus and its phylogeography, the systematization of higher plants, as well as the application of mathematical statistics methods in floristics and plant systematics.

     

During the 2024–2025 academic year, the Department of Biology conducted a number of important events as part of its methodological work. On February 21, a seminar titled "21st Century Skills: How to Develop and Assess a Lesson" was held, bringing together university lecturers and teachers from branch schools. Participants exchanged experiences on applying effective teaching methods, increasing cognitive interest in STEM classes, using assessment platforms, and implementing modern pedagogical approaches. In addition, a joint seminar with the Bayganin district branch was organized under the topic "Methodology for Organizing Laboratory Work in Biology," where school teachers shared ways to develop students’ research skills. On December 6, a regional methodological seminar on "Opportunities and Application of Artificial Intelligence" was held, where participants discussed the role of AI in the educational process, its advantages, and shared experiences with different platforms. These seminars were aimed at discussing current issues in modern education, exchanging effective teaching practices, and enhancing the professional competencies of future specialists.

 

As part of attracting foreign specialists to the educational process in the 2024–2025 academic year, from February 24 to March 7, 2025, the Department of Biology hosted Associate Professor of Lomonosov Moscow State University, Candidate of Biological Sciences Alexander Andreevich Osmolovsky. He delivered online lectures to master’s students of the following educational programs: 6B05102 – Biotechnology, 6B01505 – Biology, 7M01505 – Biology, and 7M05101 – Biology.

A.A. Osmolovsky’s main areas of scientific research include microbiology, biotechnology, biochemistry, and molecular biology. He is the author of over 40 scientific articles and 9 patents and serves as a scientific advisor for dissertations, theses, and research projects. According to the Scopus database, his Hirsch index is 13.

During the lectures, students and faculty members actively engaged with questions, to which the scientist provided comprehensive answers, leading to collaborative discussions. These sessions broadened the professional outlook of the master’s students and gave a strong impetus to their scientific endeavors.

In order to develop the definition of the quality of education, the senior teacher of the department, MD G.O.Keubasova took courses on “Pedagogical diagnostics. The priority at the Department is external and internal academic mobility of students.

In the 2021-2022 academic year, as part of the external academic mobility program, students of 2, 3 courses of EP 6V05102-Biotechnology Kuan A. A. and Uteshova A. In the 2023-2024 academic year, Aimbetova Aysana, a 2nd-year student of the 6B05102 – "Biotechnology" educational program at the Department of Biology, studied at Hacı Bayram Veli University in Ankara, Turkey. A 3rd-year student of the same program, Miramgaliyeva Nazereke, studied at Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk, Poland. Additionally, Baganova Aisha, a 3rd-year student of the 6B01505 – "Biology" program, studied at Çanakkale Onsekiz Mart University in Turkey, while Galymzhankyzy Akbota, a 3rd-year student of the same program, studied at Kastamonu University in Turkey on a grant basis for one semester.

 

         

In addition, in the 2023-2024 academic year, as part of the implementation of the internal academic mobility program, around 19 students successfully passed the competition and continued their studies at universities in other cities of Kazakhstan to enhance their knowledge.

«Biological features and selection of the breed of horses such as kushum and mugalzhary Aktobe population» – head: Ph.D., Associate Professor Rzabaev S.Since may 2020, a scientific and innovative project “Technology for growing cucumbers of domestic selection in open and protected ground” (head: PhD, acting associate Professor Bazargalieva), funded by Zhubanov University.The goal of the project is to control the growth, productivity and quality of domestic varieties of cucumbers in the open and protected ground of the Aktobe region

The project led by Associate Professor A.M. Isimov from the Department of Biology, titled “Nodular Dermatitis in Cattle: Carriers, Distribution Area, Public Awareness, and Genetic Characteristics of a Recombinant Vaccine-like Strain Found in Kazakhstan,” has won the grant funding competition from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Republic of Kazakhstan. This project, set to be implemented from 2024 to 2026, plays a crucial role as an applied research in veterinary science. Its objectives include determining the distribution area of the nodular dermatitis virus in Kazakhstan, identifying the main carriers, and increasing public awareness of the disease. Funding of 117,167,299 tenge has been allocated for this research.
