Development of entrepreneurship and the business environment began since January 2018 and has been conducted by the Center for the Development of Innovation and Entrepreneurship of Zhubanov University.
Since September 2018 the Startup Academy has been operating in the structure of the Center. The Startup Academy is a platform where startups are incubated.
The “BizARSU” incubation program includes training, mentoring, and tracking. The selection for incubation is held in the format of the “Startup Fair” business ideas competition.
The tasks of the Startup Academy are:
creating an environment conducive to the exchange of resources, people, ideas, equipment between science and industry in the region;
facilitating the strengthening of links between the university and the local industry;
ensuring the formation and growth of new enterprises created by students and young teachers, promoting new technologies;
development of student and teaching entrepreneurship and the commercialization of projects.
Services:
incubation based on the “BizARSU” incubation program on practical business skills necessary for young entrepreneurs to successfully develop their own business;
advising young entrepreneurs on economic, financial, investment and tax activities;
carrying out case-studies for solving problems of various events and competitions of start-up projects;
testing and prototyping on the basis of the Universitie’s laboratories.
The Startup Academy works on the following projects and directions:
I. National startup projects competition “Startup Bolashak - Menin Armanym”
The national competition of startup projects has been held in the republic for the fourth year in a row & Zhubanov University is the organizer of the qualifying round in the Aktobe region for the second year in a row.
In 2018, the “Menin Armanym” competition of startup projects was held between March 9-11. In total, 825 applications were received for the contest in the region. 18 startups passed the final competition, of which 12 were university projects. 6 startups went through to the semi-finals which included 3 university projects. According to the results of the competition, the 2nd year student Nurgaliyeva Zhamilya (Faculty of Natural Sciences, Speciality “Biology”) with her project “Conditions for optimal grows of petunias” became the finalist.
In 2019, the “Menin Armanym” competition of startup projects was held between April 26-28. A total of 372 applications were submitted to the competition in the region. 24 startup projects were selected this contest final, 15 of these were university projects.
II. “Ecosystem of student entrepreneurship”
The Zhubanov university for the third year is a participant in the ERG’s project “The Ecosystem of Student Entrepreneurship”. This project implemented by the Almaty Management university.
In 2018, the project “Ecosystem of Student Entrepreneurship” involved 369 teachers, staff and students of the university. 6 startups were launched within the project, among them the “Kopirka” project which operates on the campuses of the university. 7 major regional and national events were held this year. They are: “Lecturer-innovator” business ideas competition (April 7, 2018), the case-championship “Kemel kisipker” (May 18, 2018), “Project Day” (19 May 2018), Summer Business Camp “Big Ideas Camp” (August 19-26, 2018), Regional Entrepreneurial Weekend (October 22, 2018), National MeetUp (November 30, 2018).
In 2019, 4 events were held within the project “Ecosystem of Student Entrepreneurship”: “Creative Spark” (March 28, 2019), case-championship “Kemel kisipker” (April 19, 2019), “Project Day” (April 20 2019), “EcosystemERG Fair & Trackathon” (April 20-21, 2019). According to the results of the case-championship and “Project day”, 19 university students won permits to the summer business camp.
III. The university is working on the development of social entrepreneurship. To allow students to create their own social startups. Since May 2018, the “Zhas Project” competition was held in the Republic, which was aimed at involving young people in socially useful work., 11 applications were submitted from the university, 6 of which received grants for projects. The amount of funds received amounted approximately 7 million tenge.
